CO2 Impact
OuiRace lets you visualize the positive environmental impact of your connected sports activities. The CO2 Impact section of your profile estimates the carbon emissions avoided thanks to your active commutes (running, cycling, walking) compared to motorized alternatives.
How the Calculation Works
The CO2 impact calculation is based on a simple comparison: for every kilometer covered in active mode (on foot, by bike, etc.), OuiRace estimates the CO2 emissions that would have been generated if the same trip had been made by car or plane.
Comparison Method
OuiRace uses the following emission factors to estimate CO2 savings:
| Mode of transport | Average emissions |
|---|---|
| Car | ~120 g CO2/km |
| Plane (short-haul) | ~250 g CO2/km |
| Cycling / running / walking | ~0 g CO2/km |
The difference between motorized emissions and your sports activity emissions constitutes your CO2 savings.
The emission factors used are averages based on publicly available reference data. They provide a reasonable estimate but do not account for the specifics of each vehicle or flight.
Concrete Examples
To give you an idea of the impact:
- 10 km of running instead of driving = approximately 1.2 kg of CO2 saved.
- 50 km of cycling instead of driving = approximately 6 kg of CO2 saved.
- 100 km cumulative in active mode = the equivalent of the carbon footprint of an avoided Paris-Lyon flight.
Even short distances covered on foot or by bike contribute to your CO2 balance. Do not underestimate the impact of your daily commutes.
Viewing Your CO2 Impact
To see your carbon footprint summary:
- Sign in to your OuiRace account.
- Go to My profile.
- Look for the CO2 Impact section (displayed on your profile, often as a widget or dedicated section).

The section displays:
- Total CO2 saved: in kilograms, cumulative since your account was created.
- Equivalences: visual comparisons to make the number tangible (car trips avoided, equivalent trees planted, etc.).
- Trends: your progress over time.
Which Activities Are Counted?
All activities recorded on OuiRace are taken into account in the calculation. They are automatically synchronized from Strava or Garmin.
The distance of each activity is used as the basis for the calculation. Activities without a measurable distance (for example, a gym strength training session) are not included in the CO2 balance.
Only activities with a recorded distance (in kilometers) contribute to the CO2 calculation. Make sure your activities include a distance so they are counted.
Comparisons: Train vs. Plane
To make your impact more meaningful, OuiRace offers comparisons with common modes of transport:
- Equivalent car trips: how many average commutes (15 km) your savings represent.
- Equivalent avoided flights: how many short-haul flights your cumulative CO2 savings represent.
- Equivalent train trips: to highlight that even the train, cleaner than a plane, emits CO2 compared to active mobility.
These equivalences are updated automatically as your activities accumulate.
