Connect Garmin

OuiRace supports synchronization with Garmin Connect devices and accounts. If you use a Garmin watch or bike computer, you can connect your account so that your sports activities are automatically sent to OuiRace.

Why Connect Garmin?

  • Direct sync: activities recorded on your Garmin watch are automatically sent to OuiRace.
  • Broad compatibility: works with all Garmin watches and bike computers that support Garmin Connect.
  • Detailed data: heart rate, pace, cadence, elevation, and all metrics captured by your Garmin device are transmitted.
  • Challenges and leaderboards: your Garmin activities count toward races, fundraising challenges, and OuiRace leaderboards.

Prerequisites

Before connecting your Garmin account, make sure that:

  • You have an active Garmin Connect account.
  • Your Garmin device is synced with Garmin Connect (via the Garmin Connect mobile app or Garmin Express on your computer).
  • You are logged in to your OuiRace account.
Garmin Connect

Garmin Connect is Garmin's online platform. If you already use a Garmin watch, you most likely already have an account. Otherwise, create one at connect.garmin.com.

Connection Process

The connection between OuiRace and Garmin uses the OAuth with PKCE (Proof Key for Code Exchange) protocol, an enhanced security standard that protects your credentials throughout the authorization process.

Step by Step

  1. Go to your OuiRace account settings, then navigate to the Connections or Connected Apps section.

  2. Click "Connect Garmin". The Garmin connection button is displayed alongside the Strava button.

Secure Process

The OAuth PKCE protocol used by Garmin ensures that your Garmin password is never transmitted to OuiRace. Only a limited access token for activity data is exchanged.

Automatic Sync

Once your Garmin account is connected, synchronization works automatically:

  • Automatic: every completed activity synced with Garmin Connect is sent to OuiRace.
  • Seamless: no action is required on your part after the initial connection.
  • Reliable: Garmin's notification system ensures fast and reliable transmission of your data.

Typical Data Flow

  1. You finish an activity on your Garmin watch.
  2. Your watch syncs with the Garmin Connect app (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB).
  3. Garmin Connect notifies OuiRace of the new activity.
  4. The activity appears in your OuiRace dashboard and counts toward your races and challenges.
Sync Delay

The delay between finishing your activity and its appearance on OuiRace depends on how quickly your watch syncs with Garmin Connect. Typically, expect a few minutes with a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection.

Supported Sports

Garmin records a wide range of sports. OuiRace supports the main activity types:

  • Running (road, trail, treadmill)
  • Cycling (road, mountain biking, indoor trainer)
  • Swimming (pool, open water)
  • Walking and hiking
  • Skiing and winter sports
  • Other sports depending on the configuration of each race or challenge
